The Power of the Flower: Tulsi and Sweet Indrajao

Tulsi 

The botanical name for Tulsi is: Ocimum tenuiflorum (in the Lamiaceae family). It is a small flowering plant with a strong aroma. There three main types of tulsi cultivated in India. The green-leaved variety (Sri or Lakshmi tulsi, a purple-leaved variety (Krishna tulsi) and Karpoora Tulsi.  

In ayurvedic medicine the essential oil from Karpoora Tulsi is used medicinally, in skin preparations due to it’s anti-bacterial activity. It’s also used in herbal cosmetics.  It is also believed to be a sort of  ‘elixir of life’, promoting longevity.  

Sweet Indrajao  

The botanical name for Indrajao (also spelled: Indrajau) is Holarrhena pubescens  (in the Apocynaceae or Oleander family).  Much larger than Tulsi, Indrajao is a deciduous shrub or small tree that can grow up to 10 ft. high.  The stem is short with several branches. The flowers are white and are quite beautiful each with five oblong petals that turn a creamy yellow as they mature.  

The bark is used externally in ayurvedic medicine to heal skin problems. The herb is also used due to the belief that it can help relieve arthritis pain.
