Promote Hair Growth with Healthy Oil
from the Kitchen
Did you know that natural herbal oils you probably already use for skin care are known to help protect, strengthen, regrow hair and eliminate dandruff? They’re easy to apply, and when used along with the natural botanical powders, might make a difference in your rate of hair growth in just a few short months. The healthy hair oils from the kitchen and bath include: virgin coconut oil, flaxseed oil, extra-virgin olive oil and cold-pressed castor oil.
Healthy Hair Oil: Virgin Coconut Oil
Virgin Coconut oil is unadulterated and free of chemical or other additives. Virgin Coconut oil is an excellent pre-shampoo treatment because it not only coats the hair, it penetrates the hair shaft.
Coconut oil has been used to promote healthy hair growth, literally, for centuries. Protein loss is reduced and hair is protected from drying and breaking due to the medium chain triglycerides (MCT) contain within coconut oil. This is also a substance that is contained in sebum (an oily substance secreted from the sebaceous glands that keep the scalp moist). The scalp contains ‘friendly’ bacteria that break down the MCT into free fatty acids. This is what provides protection against scalp problems such as dandruff and head lice. The oil also adds a radiant sheen to the hair.
Healthy Hair Oil: Flaxseed Oil
Flaxseed oil contains an abundance of Omega-3 fatty acids that promote healthy hair growth. It’s known to revitalize the scalp in part due to its anti-inflammatory properties. The essential fatty acids have been known to combat psoriasis and eczema. Flaxseed oil, when taken as a dietary supplement, also promotes shiny, radiant and healthy hair.
Flaxseed oil can be found in whole food markets and other all-natural or herb stores. You can make your own at a fraction of the price and make sure it’s stored in amber glass instead of black plastic, but you will have to invest in a cold-press oil extractor.
To make Cold-pressed flaxseed oil, you’ll still need to purchase flax seed and an oil press extractor. Flax seed can be found easily in international farmer's markets and better grocery stores. For information on purchasing an Oil Press Extractor unit, do your own research and make your own purchasing decision according to your budget and personal need.
Healthy Hair Oil: Virgin or Extra-Virgin Olive Oil
Being rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, olive oil nourishes the hair. It is a natural conditioner and great for healthy hair shine. The emollient contained within olive oil improves hair strength, thus enabling it to grow by, stopping hair fall and breakage. Hair elasticity also increases. An olive oil scalp massage is a wonderful stress reducer.
Why Virgin or Extra-Virgin Olive Oil for Hair?
Extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) comes from virgin oil production only, contains no more than 0.8% acidity (smell is not as pungent). Virgin olive oil comes from virgin oil production only, has an acidity less than 2. This differs from Pure olive oil.
Oils labeled as Pure olive oil or Olive oil are usually a blend of refined and virgin production oil. Per Wikipedia: “Over 50% of the oil produced in the Mediterranean area is of such poor quality that it must be refined … Note that no solvents have been used to extract the oil, but it has been refined with the use of charcoal and other chemical and physical filters.”
…and now you know why it’s best to use Extra-Virgin or Virgin Olive Oil to promote healthy hair growth.
