Plant description: It is a perennial flowering plant in the coffee family. It is a shrub that climbs with tiny hooked prickles in the leaves and stems. It has small reddish-brown flowers that grow in clusters. Flowers: from June to November.

Rubia manjith was extensively cultivated for centuries form antiquity until the mid nineteenth century. It was an important source of a valuable, red pigment dye (manjeeth) found in its stems and roots throughout Asia, Europe and Africa. It is still being cultivated today in the foothills of the Himalayas in Nepal, India and Bhutan. It’s still used for dying and coloring hair and textiles; it also has medicinal properties.
