If you’ve been blessed with naturally curly hair, like me, then you know that your locks can be quite finicky if not treated with special care. In fact, when compared to straight or wavy hair, curly hair is definitely more susceptible to premature breakage that can lead to damage. This might make it harder to grow longer, curly hair. However, you can keep your curly hair growing, with the proper care and protection.

STOP FREQUENT SHAMPOOING. Avoid cleansing shampoos that strip and cause extra dryness and frizziness. Shampoo less often with mild shampoo or try a conditioner-only wash (co-wash).
MOISTURE! LOCK IT IN DAILY. Curly hair tends to be drier than other hair types; therefore, moisture is essential to eliminate frizz and brittle hair.Use a light homemade leave-in conditioner- simply add enough water to current conditioner, mix well, spray a little in your hand and rub through hair or spritz on hair with a spray bottle. If combing is needed, while hair is wet with conditioner, use a wide-toothed comb to gently comb your hair. Start from the ends, working up to the hair roots.
OIL SEAL YOUR HAIR (lightly) during cooler seasons. Jojoba, lavender and rosemary are some oils easily absorbed, so you don’t have to worry about having oily shine or hands.
SMOOTH TOWELS are the best choice for wet hair drying protection. Terrycloth towels can cause frizz and even damage the cuticle of the hair. Use a smooth fabric, like a cotton-knit (t-shirt fabric) or microfiber towel designed for curly hair.
PROTECT HAIR FROM HARSH FABRICS. Direct contact with warm, but harsh fabrics (like wool) can cause drying and static to curly hair, causing breakage. In cool weather, invest in a hat made of cashmere rather than wool –or make sure to use a hat liner or scarf made from satin or similar fabric. Cashmere or similar textiles will ensure that your hair stays looking smooth and soft when you come in from the cold.
SATIN PILLOWCASES love natural hair curls. Your hair will be kept from detangling. Cotton pillowcases suck natural oils from hair. If you don’t want to use a satin pillowcase, then cover your hair at night with a satin or satin-like hair covering. This will protect your hair from the cotton pillowcase.

STAY AWAY FROM relaxers, flat irons, blow dryers and other straightening appliances. Spiral curls can be seductively attractive if you treat them right.
DEEP CONDITION at least once a week with a moisturizing conditioner to combat excessively dry hair.
DON’T FEED SPLIT ENDS. Every 2- 3 months, have a hair stylist trim only your ends. (Seriously, that’s all that’s needed for healthy, well-cared curly hair). Make sure your stylist knows that all you want is a light trimming of the ends (not a haircut) or you may start to wonder why your hair isn't getting any longer.
