How Often Should I Wash My Hair?

That depends on the natural condition and texture of your hair. Generally it is recommended to wash your hair 2-3 times a week if your hair is normal with proper moisture balance. Wash hair daily if it is excessively oily and baby fine. If your hair texture is coarse, excessively dry or brittle, then wash it once a week (or even less). If you feel the need to wash your hair more often than recommended, try using a co-wash (conditioner-only wash).

How Do I Condition My Hair?

• Add Shine, Protect and Moisturize: Your hair also needs to be hydrated regularly in order to maintain its healthy appearance. Use your hands to apply conditioner liberally from roots to ends but comb your conditioner-soaked hair (using a wide-tooth comb) from ends to roots –gently.
• Coarse, Curly hair is usually dry hair because it’s easier for the natural oils in the scalp to run down the hair shaft if the hair is straight. Coarse, curly textured hair loves creamy, ultra-moisturizing conditioners.  For a Co-Wash (Conditioner only-Wash), rinse hair with water, then add conditioner to the wet hair, wait, then rinse out gently. Use a monthly hot oil treatment. If you suffer from extra-dry hair, every 2 weeks use an intense moisturizing treatment.

• Fine hair can appear oily within hours of washing. Better to use a lighter conditioner or none at all if you can comb your hair easily after cleansing. Apply conditioner from mid-shaft to ends, avoiding the scalp. Rinse out quickly. Lustrous Henna™ Shampoo Powder is an excellent choice for fine, oily or limp hair because there is no need to follow up with a conditioner (when not necessary). Additionally, use a little bit of Multani Mitti Clay Powder⁴ (Fullers Earth) to wash excessively oily hair. The powder will soak up oils.

• Dry, damaged hair needs: Ultra moisturizing, creamy conditioner to smooth and detangle the hair.  Avoid everything that causes dryness to the hair like blow dryers. DIY Tips for Excessively Oily Hair Care Naturally

• It is absolutely essential to stimulate circulation via scalp massage.

Apple Cider Vinegar Herbal Rinse for Oily Hair Care

An ACV or apple cider vinegar rinse is quite beneficial for treating oily hair. It rinses off excess oil and discourages dandruff. It also cuts soap and shampoo residue, leaving hair soft, smooth and naturally shiny. No worries: the vinegar smell does not remain after rinsing. 

1 pint boiling water

1 teaspoon 3 or more: burdock root, calendula flowers, chamomile flowers, lavender flowers, lemongrass, sage leaves

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Pour boiling water over herbs and steep for about 30 minutes. Strain and add vinegar. Let cool. Pour over scalp and hair as final rinse after shampooing (with either shampoo suggested below). Leave on without rinsing out.

DIY Quick Dry Shampoo

Divide hair into sections and fluff a little Multani Clay Powder through each section. Rub in well and leave on for 10 minutes. Brush out thoroughly with a clean brush. The Multani Clay Powder will absorb most of the oil and dirt from hair. (Can be done if it’s inconvenient to do traditional shampoo).

Take 3 tablespoons of Multani mitti and neem powder. Mix with milk to make a workable paste. Apply on feet; leave for 15 min. Gently rinse off with warm water. Completely dry feet with absorbent towel.

Dust affect area with Multani mitti Daily Foot Care Powder (below) before wearing socks.

Multani mitti Daily Foot Care Powder

Mix multani mitti clay powder (fuller’s earth) with equal parts of cornstarch and rub it on your feet before putting on socks. This is an excellent sweat absorbent that helps protects from athlete’s feet.

Cinnamon Foot Soak

Cinnamon has some amazing curative properties including antiseptic, antibacterial and more.

Boil 8-10 broken cinnamon sticks in a quart of water. Let simmer for approximately 5 minutes. Steep for and additional 40 minutes. While hot, but still tolerable, soak feet for 30-45 minutes daily.  Totally dry feet .

Skin Moisturizing Homemade Facial Recipes

Frankly put, our face needs protection. Our facial skin is constantly under attack from elements that can rob it of its moisture, natural suppleness and healthy glow. When this happens, our facial skin can become excessively dry and even wrinkle. Did you know that you could mix up a homemade facial that will protect your skin with moisture and other natural emollients?

When following these homemade facial recipes, remember to:

• Follow the directions for mixing, applying and rinsing off the face mask.
• Use freshly prepared face mask recipe.
• To lock in moisture, gently blot/dab skin with a few drops of olive oil.
• Always apply the face mask on cleansed and slightly damp skin, after a shower or bath.
• Best to apply and rinse off face mask before retiring to bed, so that skin can be moisturized stress-free. 

Face Masks for All Skin Types

Skin Moisturizing Emollient Face Mask

2 tbsp. Saba’s Face & Body Mask Skin Treatment
1 egg yolk
1/3 cup avocado, peeled and mashed
1/3 cup milk

Pour Saba’s Face & Body Mask Skin Treatment in small container. Beat the egg yolk until fluffy, then add and mix. Add milk and avocado, mixing thoroughly with the yolk-powder mixture. Apply gently to face with circular motions and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water to remove.  Re-rinse to close pores with cool water. Gently pat dry.

Avocado and Honey Mask

1 avocado
1 teaspoon of honey
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
½ cup of cream (or curd)

Mix all ingredients together and form into a paste. Cover and store in refrigerator for 30 minutes. Apply gently to face with circular motions and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water to remove.  Re-rinse to close pores with cool water. Gently pat dry.

Face Mask Recipes for Dry Skin

Olive Oil Egg Mask

2 tablespoons olive oil
½ teaspoon lemon juice
1 egg

Mix all ingredients together and form into a paste. Apply gently to face with circular motions and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water to remove.  Re-rinse to close pores with cool water. Gently pat dry.

Coconut Oil Face Mask

Equal parts of the following:  coconut oil, dark organic honey, lemon juice

Mix all ingredients together and form into a paste. Apply gently to face with circular motions and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water to remove.  Re-rinse to close pores with cool water. Gently pat dry. Note: This face mask will keep well in the refrigerator for several days. It can be used daily, if desired.

Face Mask Recipe for Excessively Oily Skin

Milk and Honey Face Mask

2 tablespoons for Saba’s Multani Mitti Clay (Fuller’s Earth)
1 tablespoon milk
1 tablespoon honey

Mix all ingredients together and form into a paste. Apply gently to face with circular motions and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water to remove.  Re-rinse to close pores with cool water. Gently pat dry.

Fresh Aloe Vera Face Mask

3 tablespoons Aloe Vera gel
1 tablespoon grape seed oil.

Slice the leaf of an Aloe Vera plant in half and remove the fleshy part. Mix all ingredients together and apply gently to face with circular motions; leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water to remove.  Re-rinse to close pores with cool water. Gently pat dry. (Any extra mask can be stored for several days in refrigerator).
